Emma was very excited about helping me wrap Mike’s birthday present. She also came up with the idea of giving it to him early,  so that she could watch him open it. I looked through the paper we had and found several small pieces of birthday paper that might have been around when I was a kid. We took brown craft paper and wrapped the box. Then we cut pictures out of the small pieces of wrapping paper and attached them with double-sided tape. Emma cut a few of them out because she told me she had to practice her cutting. She  decided on the positioning of each picture. She signed her name on his card and wrote his name on the envelope. She also had me add some pictures to envelope to go along with the drawing she did on the back. We even had a crazy multicolored bow to go on top. I meant to get some close-ups of our finished product, but I forgot to in the excitement of going to deliver it to Mike. I did get a few pictures of him opening the present. He decorated himself with the pictures from the package.

I gave Mike a game called Rush Hour Jr.  It is a logic game where you set up cars on a grid according to a card and then have to figure out how to maneuver the cars to get the ice cream truck out of the traffic jam.  I had taken the original version of the game when I was babysitting one time, and Mike was really good at it. I think Mike liked the gift, but I know that Andy did. He jumped up and down and ran over to give me a hug when he saw what was inside. He told me thank you more than once while we were there. Emma had a great time with all three of the boys and thoroughly enjoyed her visit.

Yesterday, Emma and I went on an adventure. Grandpa was really sick with some kind of bug, so I got to fork up the hay for the cows. Emma decided she would come watch and then maybe we could play for awhile. She said it would be an adventure. We both dressed up in our rain boots, jackets, and hats. Emma thought my outfit was funny. She watched me for a little bit, but then started running around the yard. She was very excited when she found a “baseball” in the yard. When I was done with the hay, she showed me what she’d found. It was actually a softball mostly buried in the yard. We got a spade and dug it out. It was actually in rather bad shape and had probably been there for years, but Emma thought it was wonderful. We even took it in to show Grandma and Grandpa.

Emma’s parents went to Prague, so Emma is visiting Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Sue for a week. We picked her up on Saturday afternoon, and she has done all kinds of things in the time she has been here. One of her favorite things to do is help bake. She has helped make 2 different kinds of cookies, bread, and blueberry muffins. She helps measure and mix ingredients, roll out dough, and make dough balls. She is very serious about her work. When she is really concentrating, she will stick  her tongue out just a bit. I used to do this all the time as a child, and I still do occasionally if I am really focusing on making something. Here’s some pictures of Emma helping with Ranger cookies and bread.

Trees

by: Joyce Kilmer

THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

As I was driving home tonight, the sun was starting to set. By the time I was a quarter mile from my house, the sky was a brilliant pink. As soon as I  parked, I went in and grabbed my camera. The color had already started to fade, but I managed capture some of it.
